Veteran Nigerian music icon 2Baba has sparked fresh debate in the Afrobeats community after naming Burna Boy as the artist currently leading the genre ahead of Wizkid and Davido on a global scale. The statement was made during a recent episode of the Mic On Podcast, where the singer was asked to weigh in on the long-running discussion surrounding Afrobeats’ so-called “big three.”
While stressing that he enjoys music from all three artists, 2Baba explained that his view was based on his understanding of the music industry rather than personal preference or commercial figures. According to him, Burna Boy stands out when factors such as artistry, international impact, live performances, and overall level are considered.
“I have my favorite songs from each of all of them but Burna Boy is on top of the game. He’s ahead of Davido and Wizkid, not just in Nigeria or Africa, in the world,” 2Baba said, adding that his assessment had nothing to do with money, streaming numbers, or sales, but rather a broader view of how the music translates globally.
He was careful to emphasize that the ranking was subjective and rooted in experience, noting that Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy have all contributed significantly to the global rise of Afrobeats and are doing exceptionally well in their respective careers. However, when pressed to choose who currently sits at the top, he maintained that Burna Boy leads at this moment.
