The award was a close contest. Declan Rice was widely regarded as a strong contender, with many pundits pointing to his defensive dominance, leadership and steady excellence. Voters ultimately favoured Fernandes, whose superior attacking numbers and creative influence swung the outcome.
Fernandes becomes the first Manchester United player to win the FWA prize since Wayne Rooney in 2010, capping a season in which his influence on and off the pitch was repeatedly highlighted.
