Chuck Norris, the legendary martial artist and actor, has died at the age of 86 following a sudden medical emergency in Hawaii, his family confirmed. He was hospitalized on March 19 while on Kauai and died there the next morning. The family posted a statement on his official Instagram and Facebook accounts saying they wished to keep the circumstances private and that he was surrounded by family and at peace. They described him as a "devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, incredible brother" and added, "To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends."
Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris rose to prominence as a six times undefeated World Professional Middleweight Karate champion and founded his own martial arts style, Chun Kuk Do. He moved into film with roles in action pictures including Missing in Action and The Delta Force and appeared opposite Bruce Lee in The Way of the Dragon. He became a television star for a new generation as the lead of Walker, Texas Ranger from 1993 to 2001.
Norris built a public life that combined competition, performance and teaching. He established organizations to promote martial arts and youth development, wrote books, and helped shape the image of the action hero in popular culture. His tough persona lent itself to a wide cultural footprint, including the long-running internet phenomenon known as "Chuck Norris facts."
The family asked for privacy as they grieve. He leaves behind his family and a global community of students, viewers and admirers who knew him through his films, television work and martial arts legacy.
