Frank Ilett, a Spain-based United fan known online as The United Strand, began the challenge in October 2024 after pledging not to trim his hair until the club recorded five straight victories in any competition. What started as a lighthearted vow during a difficult period for the team has since grown into a widely followed viral story, documented daily across social media platforms.
As of February 10, 2026, Ilett has gone close to 500 days without a haircut. Manchester United’s recent upturn in form under interim manager Michael Carrick has brought the challenge closer to its conclusion than at any point since it began.
