Nigerian socialite and businessman Yhemo Lee has publicly defended his wife’s fragrance brand after a mixed review from popular food critic and perfume enthusiast Opeyemi Famakin sparked online debate.
The controversy began after Famakin shared a video review of “Pomelle”, a perfume from the Jan Deux fragrance line launched in 2025 by Yhemo Lee’s wife, Thayour B. The scent, positioned as a premium feminine fragrance, features sweet fruity notes with hints of crisp apple, caramel or cotton candy tones, and a warm vanilla base.

The Review That Sparked the Reaction
Famakin, who said he purchased the perfume himself, described Pomelle as sweet, playful, and pleasant but stopped short of calling it exceptional. He reportedly rated it around 7 to 7.5 out of 10, noting that while the scent was decent, he was unimpressed by the packaging quality, specifically mentioning issues with the bottle’s print peeling despite its high price point, which he estimated to be around ₦160,000.
His review focused on scent profile, longevity, and value for money, positioning Pomelle as good but not outstanding within the luxury fragrance space.
Yhemo Lee Fires Back
Yhemo Lee responded strongly via Instagram Stories, calling out Famakin over what he perceived as unnecessary criticism. In a series of posts that quickly went viral, Yhemo Lee questioned Famakin’s motives, accused him of bitterness, and mocked his appearance in remarks that drew mixed reactions online.
He also defended the commercial success of the brand, claiming that over 1,000 bottles of Pomelle had sold out twice, which he cited as proof that the product resonated with buyers regardless of the critique.

Further fueling the controversy, Yhemo Lee alleged that Famakin’s team had previously been contacted for a paid promotional review during the perfume’s launch and that a fee of ₦6 million was quoted but not accepted. He implied that the absence of payment may have influenced the tone of the review.
Famakin Responds
Famakin did not stay silent. He responded publicly, defending his right to give an honest review as a paying customer. He stressed that a 7.5/10 rating is not an attack, adding that constructive criticism should not be confused with hate or sabotage.
He maintained that he had no obligation to inflate a review simply because the brand belonged to a public figure’s spouse and reiterated his stance on consumer transparency.
An Ongoing Conversation
As of now, the issue remains a social media-driven debate, with no indication of reconciliation between both parties. What is clear, however, is that the clash has drawn even more attention to the Jan Deux fragrance line and highlighted the growing influence of critics and creators in Nigeria’s lifestyle and luxury space.
